Choice stress

Imagine you're in group 8. That means you're 11, 12 or maybe even 13 years old. And suddenly you have to make a very big decision that could determine the rest of your life. So, it's very important that you make the right choice. Among other things, the open days are a good tool for this. The open days are held annually before the enrollment period begins. Students can, for example, spend a day at the school or just visit it, talk to students and teachers, and get a feel for the atmosphere. But as mentioned, it's not always easy, especially now. Because in the current circumstances, it's impossible for schools to organize open days. Unfortunately.

And now what?

Yes, what can you do then? Because students still have to make a choice. A solution had to be found for that. In this case, an online solution. So that students can still find a school. LMC-VO asked us to think along with them on this regard.

Schoolvinden.nu

We developed the website schoolvinden.nu to help students find the right secondary education. On the website, 8th-grade students can take a fun test to figure out which school suits them best. The most important starting point is that the students can indicate what they really enjoy doing.

The test consists of 11 statements that relate to the different schools of LMC-VO. Using a 'scale of smileys,' the student can indicate how much each statement applies to them. Of course, you can also take your school advice from primary school into account in the test. The test result presents three schools that best match the student's interests and level. With just one click, the student can send their results to a parent or caregiver, so they can review and discuss them together.

A voting guide

In essence, we have created a voting guide. But instead of boring political statements, we focused on educational offerings! Quick, fun, and easy! Even adults (parents/caregivers and teachers) who are involved in this decision-making moment can find a lot of information on the website. This way, we can still ensure that group 8 children will go to a school next year that really suits them!

Approach

The approach to this project was a challenge in itself. We had a very short timeframe to work with. First, we had to figure out how to bring together the client's requirements and those of the target audience.

We did this through a series of brainstorming sessions. During these sessions, we put ourselves in the shoes of the client and the end user. An idea is followed by a plan which ultimately results in a concept. In addition to the client's requirements and the end user's needs, this project also had a very tight schedule and a pre-determined budget. Even more reason to let our creativity speak. After we could check off all the requirements, we presented our concept to the client.

Before we built the current website, we created a temporary landing page. The landing page already contained some information for visitors to view.

Afterwards, we quickly delivered a design, then described user stories and started building. Even before the front-end was visible, the content was filled. By working with all of our expertise simultaneously, we were able to make this project happen. Teamwork was essential!

We did everything we could to make the launch happen around the registration period. Close collaboration with the client was crucial. We kept each other informed almost daily. It was a close relationship between the client and the contractor.

Technical challenge

The short lead time was one of the biggest challenges in this project. Fortunately, we were able to switch and build quickly. For LMC-VO, we use a multi-site environment.

This functionality of the Umbraco CMS offers a lot of possibilities. It is also user-friendly and easy to use. Within the current multi-site environment, we were able to quickly create a new website.

We could also reuse content components for text and images, which allowed us to build a website with the desired functionalities at lightning speed.

Continuation

The product is now being used. We are very curious about the eventual results. That's why we are measuring various aspects.

With this data, we can further develop the website. But perhaps even more importantly, it provides LMC-VO with many insights about the target audience. With these insights, LMC-VO can inform and advise their school community. Ultimately, this will allow them to better ensure the quality of education.
